About Us

Rangitaiki Tours is a locally owned Maori family business based in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Our passion is sharing the natural beauty and rich Maori heritage of our land and people, to the world. Born and bred locals we have over 30+ years knowledge offering packaged tours showcasing whenua (land), wai (water) and kai (food).

Our tours connect manuhiri (visitors/guests) to tangata whenua (local people of the land) while we transport you to cultural and nature landmarks of significance, sharing our history and Maori customs. We specialise in small group tours to enhance an intimate experience providing set itineraries, or we can tailor make unique experiences to suit specific needs.

Cultural Experience – Wheako Ahurea

Nau mai haere mai ki wheako 6-haora! Welcome to our 6-hour guided experience! Let our kaiārahi (local guide) lead you on a journey of nature, culture, food, whānau (family) and long-lasting memories across our ātaahua (beautiful) region. Let tangata whenua (local people of the land) transport you in our comfortable van to cultural and nature landmarks of significance while we share the region’s Māori history and customs.

Hī Ika – Land Based Fishing

Nau mai haere mai ki Hi Ika! Welcome to our land-based fishing experience!

Encounter traditional and modern methods of gathering kai (food) from majestic wai (water) source. Whether awa (river), roto (lake) or moana (ocean) you will be transported in our comfortable van and guided exclusively by our local knowledgeable kaiarahi (local guide). In addition to gathering, preparing, and cooking your catch, view cultural and nature landmarks of significance, hear in depth cultural history and legendary stories and connect closely with tangata whenua (local people of the land).

Nau mai haere mai ki Matauranga! Welcome to our cultural immersion experience! Encounter authentic Maori culture first-hand. Live and learn from tangata whenua (local people of the land) and become whanau (family).

Mt Ruapehu Winter Transport

Nau mai haere mai ki waka hukarere! Welcome to our Mt Ruapehu snow transport! Whether you are a learner or pro, let us take the hassle out of getting to the maunga (mountain) to slay the slopes. Chill and relax as we pick you up and drop you off to Whakapapa or Tūroa ski fields.

What should I wear?

The clothing recommended to wear depends on the experience as well as weather and temperature conditions on the day. Comfortable active wear is most suitable. Please refer to each experience for more specific detail.

What do I need to bring?

Please refer to each experience detail to find out what you need to bring.

Is pick-up from and drop-off to my location available?

Yes, we provide pick up and drop off service to save you the hassle of getting to and from the experience. This option is available during the booking process. Please note there may be an additional charge.

Can anyone take part?

As much as we would love to provide experiences for everyone, the safety and wellbeing of you, us and the public is what’s most important. Due to the nature of activities in some of our experiences there may be restrictions. Please read the detail of each experience carefully to ensure it is the right fit for you.

Is food and drink included?

Yes. In Māori culture it is customary to provide a meal for manuhiri (visitors/guests) and we source all our kai (food) locally. If you have specific dietary requirements, please ensure to include details upon booking.

Please note there is an exception with Mt Ruapehu winter transport.

What type of food and drink is included?

The food and drink are wide ranging and varies depending upon the experience and weather conditions on the day. If you have specific dietary requirements, please ensure to include details upon booking. We will endeavour to meet your needs but in extreme cases where we are unable to do so we will work with you to provide alternate arrangements.

Can we bring our own food and drinks?

You are more than welcome to bring your own. Our experiences provide food (with the exception of Mt Ruapehu winter trsnport) so unfortunately, there is no discount available should you choose to bring your own.

Are toilet facilities available?

Yes, toilet facilities are available for each experience.

Can we bring personal valuables?

We recommend avoiding bringing items of value unless it is intended for them to be carried/secured with you for the duration of the experience, for example phone or camera. Rangitāiki Tours Limited accepts no responsibility for damage or loss of personal possessions, except where have legal obligation to do so.

Do I need to have some level of experience?

No not at all. However, due to the nature of activities in some of our experiences there may be fitness requirements or restrictions. Please read the detail of each experience carefully to ensure it is the right fit for you. Rest assured you are in capable safe hands with our kaiārahi (local guide). If you are unsure about suitability please enquire with us.

What is the gradient of walking?

The gradients vary from easy to difficult. Elevation ranges from approximately 50 to 800 metres. Please refer to each experience for specific detail.

How rough is the terrain for the walk?

The terrain varies from paved pathway, grass, sand or natural uneven surface. We recommend wearing footwear that is durable, comfortable and has good grip.

What is the risk of being hurt or injured by wildlife?

As with any outdoor activity there is natural wildlife. We are amongst papatūānuku (mother earth) and respect that the land is a habitat for others. Luckily New Zealand is relatively safe in terms of dangerous creatures and the risk of being hurt or injured is low. Our knowledgeable kaiārahi (local guide) will advise you of any high-risk areas. If you have a concern of anaphylaxis or any other health or safety issue, please let us know upon booking or prior to the experience start.

What if I don’t want to participate in some of the experience?

Everything is optional, and your comfort, safety, wellbeing and happiness is our priority. If there is something that you would like to opt out of that is absolutely fine. Unfortunately, as we plan and resource our experiences to set itineraries and budgets, we are unable to refund parts of the experience that you do not partake in.

What is the cancellation policy?

What happens if the weather is bad?

We constantly monitor the weather and other conditions/events that may affect experiences. In the unlikely event of postponement or cancellation we will notify you. Please refer to each experience for more specific detail on timeframes. Where we postpone or cancel, credit for a future date or refund (less 5% administration fees) will be offered.
