Nau Mai, Haere Mai
Step into the Eastern Bay of Plenty
Arrive manuhiri (visitor/guest), leave whanaungatanga (with kinship)
Rangitaiki Tours is a locally owned Maori family business based in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Born in June 2019 from a passion to share the natural beauty and rich Maori culture of the region, we offer packaged tourism experiences showcasing whenua (land), wai (water) and kai (food).
Our passion at Rangitaiki Tours is to bring together and connect manuhiri (visitors/guests), to the local land and tangata whenua (people of the land), through cultural storytelling and personalised experiences.
We do this by offering local guided experiences in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, with emphasis on the region’s natural beauty, combined with knowledge of local Maori history and customs.

Rangitaiki Tours specialise in small group tours, to enhance an intimate experience. As a treasured guest you will experience the region’s nature, culture and food, creating friendships and unforgettable memories along the way!

What should I wear?
The clothing recommended to wear depends on the tour, hire or service booked as well as weather and temperature conditions on the day. Comfortable active wear is most suitable. For more specific detail:
- Waka Ama – Beach wear is suitable, such as a short sleeve or t-shirt for top and shorts or comfortable quick-dry pants for bottom. A windbreaker or jersey is recommended as weather is unpredictable and it pays to be prepared. For footwear, open shoes that drain water and can be easily removed, such as beach shoes, crocs or jandals. Heavy fabric clothing, like denim, is not recommended.
- Hikoi and eBike hire – For top, a short or long sleeve top is fine, and for bottom, shorts or pants. Soft, lightweight moisture wicking clothing is ideal and wearing layers is recommended to cover all types of weather conditions and temperatures. Footwear is important, especially for our longer walk tours. Footwear that is durable, comfortable and with good grip is appropriate.
- Wairua Wellbeing – Whatever you find comfortable is most suitable. You will be walking through nature for around 30-45 minutes, so you may want to consider closed shoes, however jandals/sandals are fine too. If you wear long trousers/pants, please check that they can be rolled up for your foot soak.
What do I need to bring?
A. For Waka Ama, Hikoi Tours and eBike hire we recommend bringing a hat, full water bottle, camera to capture those awesome moments, sunglasses and lip balm.
We supply everything else that you need.
Is pick-up from and drop-off to my location available?
Yes, we provide pick up and drop off service to save you the hassle of getting to and from the tour. This option is available during the booking process. Please note there is an additional charge.
Can anyone take part in this tour?
Our kaupapa (approach) is to provide experiences to suit everyone. However, the safety and wellbeing of you, us and the public is most important and due to the nature of activities in some of our experiences there may be restrictions. Please read the detail of each experience carefully to ensure it is the right fit for you.
For the Waka Ama tour I am not a confident swimmer, is that okay?
Yes. We supply you with a life jacket and there will be a health and safety briefing. You are also in experienced hands with our world class experienced Kaihaūtu (skipper) Raanj.
Is food and drink included?
Yes. In Māori culture it is customary to provide a meal for manuhiri (visitors/guests) and our kaupapa (approach) is to source from local suppliers and/or establishments. If you have specific dietary requirements, please ensure to include details upon booking.
Please note there is an exception with eBike hire, as where you go and what you do is up to you. In saying that, we do provide ‘Kai Me Te Inu (Food & Drink)’ to meet all your catering requirements if needed.
What type of food and drink is included?
The food and drink are wide ranging and varies depending upon the tour or service and weather conditions on the day. The menu for your specific tour will be shared with you 2 days prior to the tour or service start. If you have specific dietary requirements, please ensure to include details upon booking. We will endeavor to meet your needs but in extreme cases where we are unable to do so we will work with you to provide alternate arrangements.
Can we bring our own food and drinks?
You are more than welcome to bring your own. For Waka Ama, Hikoi Tours and eBike hire we recommend bringing a full water bottle. For Waka Ama, Hikoi Tours and Wairua Wellbeing lunch, including drinks, is provided. Unfortunately, there is no discount available should you choose to bring your own food and drinks.
Are toilet facilities available?
Yes. For Waka Ama, Hikoi Tours and Wairua Wellbeing toilet stops are included into the tour. For eBike hire we provide a map that includes public toilets.
Can we bring personal valuables?
We recommend to avoid bringing items of value unless you intend to carry them with you throughout the tour, hire or service, for example phone or camera. Rangitāiki Tours Limited accepts no responsibility for damage or loss of personal possessions, except where have legal obligation to do so.
Do I need to have some level of experience?
No not at all. However, due to the nature of activities in some of our experiences there may be restrictions. Please read the detail of each carefully to ensure it is the right fit for you. Rest assured you are in capable safe hands with our kaiārahi (local guide). If you are unsure about suitability please enquire with us.
What is the gradient of the hikoi (walk) tours?
The gradients vary from easy (4-hour) to difficult (8-hour). Elevation ranges from approximately 50 metres (4-hour) to 800 metres (8-hour).
How rough is the terrain for the hikoi (walk) tours?
The terrain varies from paved pathway, grass, sand or natural uneven surface. We recommend wearing footwear that is durable, comfortable and has good grip.
What is the risk of being hurt or injured by wildlife?
As with any outdoor activity there is naturally wildlife. We are amongst papatūānuku (mother earth) and respect that the land is a habitat for others. Luckily New Zealand is relatively safe in terms of dangerous creatures and the risk of being hurt or injured is low. Our knowledgeable kaiārahi (local guide) will advise you of any high-risk areas. If you have a concern of anaphylaxis or any other health or safety issue, please let us know upon booking or prior to the tour, hire or service start.
For the Wairua Wellbeing experience can I substitute the foot soak?
Our experiences are set itineraries and we plan and resource them accordingly. So unfortunately we cannot substitute the foot soak or any other part of that experience. You do have the option to opt out, however refund is not available.
What if I don’t want to participate in some of the experience?
Everything is optional, and your comfort, safety, wellbeing and happiness is our priority. If there is something that you would like to opt out of that is absolutely fine. Unfortunately, as we plan and resource our tours and service to set itineraries and budgets, we are unable to refund parts of the experience that you do not partake in.
Where is the pick-up and drop-off for eBike hire?
The pick-up and drop-off location is in Whakatāne. Once your eBike hire is confirmed we will advise exact details. eBike drop-off and pick-up service to your specified location within the Whakatāne or Ōhope area is available and may be selected upon booking. Please note there may be an additional charge.
